Research of child learning ability progress was carried out over several years to gauge the effectiveness of sensory integration therapy on improving the neuro-efficiency and improving learning capacity.
The study was carried out with the premise that a child’s brain is in a constant state of development and learning ability can be increased. It was important that internationally accepted assessments were used in order for the study to have credibility. Accordingly, the Beery VMI and the TVPS-3 (see assessments) were used as appropriate neurological development tests. The study of 62 children diagnosed as having learning difficulties was conducted over the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

In both visual perceptual and visual motor integration assessments, the median standardized scores for the study cohorts over the two academic years showing extremely statistically significant improvement with a correlated increase in neuro-physiological performance across the two assessment schemes.
The results showed an unusual advancement in the children’s development. They indicate that the sensory integration therapy program was distinctly effective in improving the neuro- physiological development of children with learning difficulties. The abilities of integrating information (VMI) and processing visual input (TVPS-3) are essential to neuro-efficiency and intelligence and have a direct correlation to a child’s learning capability and academic achievement. When a teaching programme is based on a sensory development programme, children show remarkable progress in their development and academic achievement.
